Ruben Orteza is the local pastor of The True Vine Christian Reformed Church. He served as OMF Literature’s Marketing Officer for five years, until God recently called him to full-time ministry. He is also taking up Pastoral Studies in Asian Theological Seminary.

This is the second of two parts of an article he wrote about Faith in the Corridors of Power for our Book Encounters column in Evangelicals Today. Check out Part 1 here

==========================================================================

As a whole, reading the book has left me with two things. First, is a deeper appreciation for the authors, both Evelyn Miranda-Feliciano and Dr Jovito Salonga. Feliciano was one of the Philippines’ gifted writers, and it is evident in how she was able to compose each article in this book. Putting together Scripture, life issues and thoughts from Dr Salonga was not an easy task, but the articles in this book read seamlessly. Dr Salonga is an admired statesman, but his reflections here contribute to a more complete picture of the man. His faith and thoughts, together with his experiences, are valuable lessons for all of us, whether in government or outside-looking in.

Second, it is affirmed in this book that God is engaged in these issues in government and politics, as he is in all of life. He gives wisdom through the meditation of his Word, the Bible. He shapes and equips his people to meet life-issues head-on. He gives faith and hope for a broken world, including its government and politics. Sometimes we forget that all of life is meant to be lived under God. Faith in the Corridors of Power reminds us that even in the twisted corridors of power God is there, transforming and guiding his people. This leads us to thanksgiving and worship, hope and perseverance, as we live in faith to a God who is faithful and powerful.

An excerpt from Faith in the Corridors of Power:

Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in your weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Corinthians 12:8-10

It must have been a long, deep struggle for the Apostle Paul to come to this stage of contentment with the “thorn in the flesh” he had been given. What this “thorn in the flesh: was has been a subject of speculation. It could be malaria, an eye disease, stammering, epilepsy or any physical ailment that was chronic and painful. The church fathers (both Catholic and Protestant Reformers) believed it was a spiritual affliction. Paul was never able to feel he was secure from Satan’s wiles and was subject to temptation of the flesh in their acute forms.

Whatever that weakness was, Paul did not relent to it. Nor did he slink into a corner nursing his irritation and expecting defeat. Instead, he continued to boldly show active faith. This weakness was surely a hindrance and he recognized it. It was there, he would resist it, not by his own puny strength but Christ’s. Now Paul made its presence a reason to boast; God’s immensity through Christ was manifested. Rather than struggle, he became content. In his weakness, Christ became his strength for greater service.

“Being physically crippled is no joke,” Dr. Salonga recalls. Active as he was before the bombing, it was very hard for him to be bedridden and wheelchair-bound while recuperating. “But the greater tragedy,” he reflects “is to be spiritually and morally disabled. Our bones may be shattered, our body may be covered with ugly scars, but as long as we are with Him, what difference does it make where we really are? Whether on the mountaintop of joy, or in the deep valley of pain and despair, may our faith be an active, working faith, so that we may live in larger dimensions of courage and service and compassion.”

Where does our disablement lie? Is it physical? Are we suffering from moral weakness that causes us to be blind to the evil around us? Are we spiritually deaf not to hear the voice of our Savior to help others? Who do we go to for help and strength in our weakness?

We can ask God for help to let our feet and hands, our voices and hearts, minister to others, so that the Gospel we profess may shine in our faces and be seen in our lives.

Innovation and creativity are not just for artists and inventors. All of us need a little of this to get out of dillemas, puzzles and problems that come at us everyday in school, at work, in church or at home. So here are some tips on how you can develop your being innovative.

READ

Are you even surprised that this is first on our list? Reading brings your to worlds you normally would not reach just by sitting in a room. There are so many ideas that you can get from reading about other people’s ideas, experiences and suggestions. Just make sure you give credit where credit is due. In other words, don’t pass off something as your original idea when you got it elsewhere.

FIND YOUR CREATIVE HANDLE

Inspiration and creativity can be found everywhere especially in the digital information age. It’s a matter of filtering what you watch/read/listen to and actually using what you learn from them. So choose what inspires you: whether it be art, music, nature, computers, games or even other people.

THE PHILIPPINES AND THE US ARENT THE ONLY COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD

In other words, learn more about other countries and other cultures. You’ll discover that creativity and innovation flows even more freely in other places. A lot of the most innovative ideas have come from places or things that people are not familiar with.

WRITE IT DOWN

A lot of the famous inventors have journals and notebooks where they wrote down their ideas and thoughts and later on used these to create their now famous inventions. Sketch books, scrap books, post it notes, tissue paper, bus tickets. It doesn’t matter, as long as it is written down for posterity’s sake.

NEVER STOP BEING CURIOUS

We love hearing kids who always ask “why, how, when, where, what”. Adults should never lose this child-like trait. It’s okay to always be curious and inquisitive rather than be quiet in your own little space and lose that sense of wonder.

FIND YOUR CREATIVE PLACE

When trying to solve a problem that you’re frustrated with, step outside the problem first, look for a place where you can think , and just spend a few minutes thinking of “outside the box” solutions, then trim them down until you come up with an exciting but practical idea. Whether it is a coffee shop, a bookshop (you’re welcome to hang out at our bookshops by the way), a park, the MRT, the bathroom, as long as you can think and relax and step away from school/work/church/home.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE RISKS AND MAKE MISTAKES

More often than not, you will probably fail the first or even 2nd time around. The important thing is you learn from what went wrong and just keep trying until you get it the 4th, 5th, 6th time.

BE INSPIRED BY THE MASTER INNOVATOR

There are countless ways that God has shown how creative He can be. Think: enormous boat, Joseph’s dreams, burning bush, writing on the wall, talking donkey, God becoming man. We can go on and on, but just remember, God can never be put in a box, and as His children, He has given us wisdom and creativity and the Holy Spirit, so we have no excuse!

What are the other things you do to become more innovative? Share in the comments section below!

Ruben Orteza is the local pastor of The True Vine Christian Reformed Church. He served as OMF Literature’s Marketing Officer for five years, until God recently called him to full-time ministry. He is also taking up Pastoral Studies in Asian Theological Seminary.

This is the first of two parts of an article he wrote about Faith in the Corridors of Power for our Book Encounters column in Evangelicals Today. To view Part 2, click here.

==========================================================================

The Christian faith has always been lived in the day to day circumstances of life. That Jesus Christ was born into the Jewish culture and grew up from baby to man at least tells us that faith and life go together. As Jesus began his public ministry, what he taught was not isolation from the world. Jesus gave us ‘eyes of faith’ to look at all of life—faith to live life as God’s people, priests and ambassadors.

But even with eyes of faith there are areas of life that are harder viewed than others. Politics and government have twisted corridors and multiple mirrors that most Christians would turn a blind eye to these issues or not look at all. Ignorance is bliss, no matter that ignorance in this case is wrong. But there are those among us more courageous—perhaps more faith-filled?—who dare to address these issues. Their example should encourage us to faith-filled engagement as well.

The late Evelyn Miranda-Feliciano was an active participant in this faith-life interplay. Her many writings show how she sought to bring her faith in many areas of Filipino living: Filipino Values and Our Christian Faith, Enjoy the Sunset, Hope Away from Home, Beyond the Honeymoon, Love and Courtship, and Love, Sex and Marriage. Her past involvement with the Institute for Studies in Asian Church and Culture (ISACC) reflected her love for the Philippine Church and culture.

Dr Jovito Salonga is a respected name in government and politics. He is a former Senate President, a statesman, an advocate of justice and the so-called ‘conscience of the nation.’ His writings include Not by Power of Wealth Alone, The Task of Building a Nation, and A Journey of Struggle and Hope. He is also a man of faith with a deep love for God’s Word. His life is truly a testimony of faith in the corridors of power.

Faith in the Corridors of Power is Feliciano’s last book with OMF Literature. In this book, she reflects on the writings of Dr Salonga about government, politics, national leadership, service and faith. She presents to us a Dr Salonga we are not familiar with, a spiritual and faith-filled man, who tried to live his faith as a lawyer and government official. Most of us know of him from his time in government; here in this book we read honest reflections of the faith that inspired the man, and shaped his convictions and decisions.

Each article has three elements: an area or issue in government or politics; a passage from the Bible that helps us look at this issue; and insights from Dr Salonga as he grappled with the interplay of both issue and God’s Word. Feliciano skillfully weaves all three elements into challenging and thoughtful articles for all of us. A sampling of the chapter titles show us the wide range of themes explored: Ethics, Peace Based on Justice, Sentinel of Justice, Loving Our Land, Air-conditioned Religion, Active Faith, Knowing the Right and Defending It, Respect of the Law, Respect is Earned, Politics as a Vocation.

Faith in the Corridors of Power has 87 articles, not arranged in any particular order. What was helpful to me was not to read the whole book in one sitting, but to read one chapter at a time. The insights of Dr Salonga and the presentation of Evelyn Miranda-Feliciano are already mind-engaging in themselves, but additional questions for reflection are included for each article.

First, you went on a road trip. Along the way, you got lost and had to steer your life back on track. Now your tank is running low on gas. You need a fresh infusion of wisdom and inspiration.

You need to REFUEL

In Ru dela Torre’s 3rd book with OMF Literature, he shares a mix of personal reflections and devotional entries or “reflectio-devos” to energize you while you’re spending quiet times with God. Here’s how you can fine-tune your spirit with the help of this book:

Spend time in prayer and personally worship God

Read the Bible and meditate on what it says

Cap it off by reflecting on the week’s entry from this book

Some of the “reflectio-devo” titles in the book are

Better Than Plastic

Book without words

Bitten by the love bug

Everything except the music

Unforgettable night at the movie house

Get rid of the mess

When God says no

Intrigued yet? We’re giving you the chance to read the first 3 entries of Refuel! All you have to do is follow the simple instructions by clicking here

Here are just some of the great, inspirational quotes which you can get from Refuel:

“Just in case you find yourself in need of a miracle today – healing, provision or a way out – know that God is able to produce something out of nothing. Remember that when He created everything, He started with nothing. Out of the emptiness, He spoke the universe into existence. He turned things around at His command. And He hasn’t lost a bit of that power.”

“If you crave to live the right way, seek for what the Word says and not what the world says. And as you encounter the truth, you’ll have all the reasons in the world to shift from an old way to a new way of thinking and doing, one that is consistent with what God says.”

“The more we opt for love, the more we are able to become like Christ. Just like Jesus, we ought to hate the sin, but not the sinner. Forgive people. Help those who hurt you. Overcome evil by doing good. Destroy hatred with love. And as we do this, we become more and more like Jesus…”

Refuel will be available soon at all OMF Lit Bookshops, National Bookstore and PCBS nationwide for only P195.

Our guest blogger for today is Mari Ann Rose “Mariah” Gadapan, a self-described Woman with a Mission, who is working in the corporate world but is also strongly involved in her church ministry. To read more of her writing, you can visit her blog, A Woman With a Mission

Thank you Mariah for sharing your insights about this book. Here’s her review of What Women Don’t Know by Michelle McKinney Hammond

This book is a very good one. The authors made me fell in love with the contents. I agree to one of the comments of a Pastor on this book, “the authors have produced a masterpiece that gives the most balanced, practical understanding of relationships. Their common sense approach to relationships will make you laugh, cry and wonder, ‘why didn’t i read this before i entered my first relationship?’ “ But of course, they didn’t just use their common sense to share their thoughts in this book but most importantly, this book is Bible-based.

Every content is very sensible and meaty. As i was reading the book, i wanted to highlight everything because every word is very meaningful and helpful.

I like what one of the authors said, “you can not have a complete relationship with an incomplete man , and usually can’t recognize his brokenness until you are fixed.”

They also tackled the value of women and how we women should value ourselves as we deal with our relationship with men. Let me share here some of the meaty statements in this book about the value of women : ” as a woman, you are are not a taste test either. No man should be able to sample you and then decide if he wants to pay the cost associated with claiming you as his own. Neither should he have the freedom to sample and discard you in pursuit of something that he thinks might taste better or have a lower price. You are priceless- fearfully and wonderfully made. God shaped and molded you in his own image. You were created, redeemed and deeply loved and valued by God. Therefore, the man who wants to be involved with you should have to count the cost. Understand your worth and know your value. Realize that your value does not decrease if you are alone. Your value increases according to your depth of character. Having a man is not what gives you value. Your value is established and stated by God before the beginning of time. Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies (Proverbs 31:10 NKJV). Only you can lower your cost.”

The authors also gave a warning not to be hasty in giving a man the title of Mr. Right. I like what the authors said, “A lot of women in their exaggerated need for a man have not been discerning. They have settled for dogs and frogs instead of waiting for the man that God calls a good and perfect gift for them.”

These statements are also strong and need to be considered: “It is the spirit of a woman that a man senses. He wants a woman who every man wants but every man has not had…A man does not want a woman he has to question or worry about. If a woman gives her body to a man too soon, he will always wonder how many other she has given herself to.”

This book is balanced. It didn’t only tackle spiritual aspect of relationship but it also advised women not to ignore their physical appearance. I like what the authors said, “You can turn a man’s head without turning his heart, but if you don’t turn his head, you may not get to his heart. Men are visually stimulated, so you can not ignore your physical appearance.” But the author also encouraged women to dress appropriately.

I strongly agree to this statement and i like it very much: “The hearts of men and kings is in the Lord’s hands, and he is able to turn their hearts which every way he wishes. When a man or woman’s ways please the Lord, he promises to make even their enemies live at peace with them. If he is able to cause your enemies look upon you favorably, how much more will he bless you by turning the heart of a good man in your direction? That’s your cue. Make sure when the right man looks your way, he is able to agree with God and say, ” It is good.”"

On love stories

by Beng Alba

Disney’s Tangled made me cry (the twist near the end made me think of O.Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi”). Links featuring remarkable relationships and heroic displays of commitment earn prime real estate spots on my Facebook wall. Aging couples walking side by side, holding on to each other as they wobble through the street, tell me that true love can last.

What makes me sigh and applaud these stories of love I see on screen and off? Am I just being a hopeless romantic sucked into the sappy world of happily-ever-afters? Or is there something within me — how I am made by God — that prompts me to instinctively desire and recognize a love that is noble and true?

- – - – - -

The Lover constantly woos His beloved. He initiates, He pursues. Sometimes the other responds; yet most of the time, she doesn’t. Undeterred by the other’s acts of rejection and betrayal, He prods on. He doesn’t want anything that she can give Him, only that she realizes how deeply she is loved.

- – - – - -

Six years ago, I wrote this on my blog:

Love is not the fireworks that illuminate the sky every New Year’s eve; it is the constant, steady light from a lamp that brightens a room every night. It’s not being blown away by the music of a symphony orchestra; it’s being warmed by the strains of a familiar tune from the radio.

And love, more than being about passion, is rather about grace. For isn’t this the same way we are loved by God — that we are loved, not because we deserved it (we didn’t and we don’t) but because He simply chose to? That we didn’t have to pay Him with good works for us to be declared worthy of love? For if that were the case, wouldn’t that be just barter, that is, “my good works in exchange for Your love”? Would it ever be right for love to be cheapened by becoming an obligatory gesture due someone for services rendered? No. A thousand times no.

- – - – - -

Stories of love stir me. Yet all love stories — even those concocted in the laboratory of Hollywood or grown in the fertile imagination of the most successful novelists — pale in comparison with the greatest Love Story of all. Why? Because this Love Story is as real as the tears shed by the Man on a cross, giving His life for His beloved.

=========================================================================

Beng Alba is the author of two of Hiyas’ books bestsellers, Ang Batang Ayaw Maligo and Joey and the Gulay Gang. She is also the Assistant Publications Manager of OMF Literature. And she is very much in love with someone and with God

Just because Valentine’s Day has come and gone does not mean that you cannot express your love and gratitude to your loved ones. We are called to “love our neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27b)

Here are some of our simple tips on how you can show your love for your parents, children, friends, office mates, church mates, and even your neighbor (literally) and this time, it’s the reading and writing edition!

Leave a surprise, random note

Write an encouraging Bible verse, quote or a self-written note and leave it in random places where your loved one can find them: refrigerator, your kids’ lunch box, your husband/wife’s laptop, bulletin board in the office/church. A personal and hand-written note will never fail to brighten up someone’s day

Read to someone who can’t

It may be a grandparent whose eyesight is failing, or a child who still cannot read on their own or you can even volunteer at the local hospital. Choose a story that is fun where you can use different voices or a non-fiction book that is full of insight and encouragement.

Dedicate a blog entry to a loved one

Public declarations of love, not just the romantic kind, are always appreciated. Write about a particular incident that you remember from your childhood or a fiction story that is inspired by real-life events or a top ten list of why you love him/her or even a poem or song you wrote for him/her

Make a poster of their favorite scene or quote from their favorite book

You can design it yourself or you can ask an artist friend to design it for you. You can even make a scrapbook type of poster. It won’t cost much since you can have it printed in digital printing shops. Your book-loving loved one will definitely love this gesture.

Field trip to a library

Apparently, there are still places called libraries And for your book-loving but very busy loved one, a field trip or date in a library is a rare but wonderful opportunity to spend hours immersed in all these books. Some suggestions for public libraries: The National Library in Manila, Quezon City Public Library (different branches scattered all over QC), Filipinas Heritage Library, The Children’s Library

What are your other suggestions for expressing your love to your writer or book lover loved ones? Share in the comments section below

Be Filled With Gratitude by Nelson T. Dy

(excerpt from The Honeymoon Never Ends)

Joy and gratitude go hand in hand, like two sides of the same coin. If we find joy in something, we are thankful that it exists to give us that joy. If we are thankful for something, we are setting ourselves up for delight. Conversely, joylessness breeds cynicism, grumbling and criticizing. If we complain about our jobs, health, country and yes, even our marriages, it is a guaranteed recipe for misery.

Gratitude is more significant than you think. Author Gordon Smith once made an intriguing observation that believers in God are distinct in that they give thanks to God while unbelievers mostly refuse to do so. He cites Paul’s description of the latter, “For although (unbelievers) knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:21)

Therefore, thankfulness is an integral part of being a Christian. A thankless Christian is a contradiction in terms. Not to give thanks to God leads to mental and moral deterioration, which would of course, adversely impact a marriage. No wonder, then, the apostle Paul sprinkles his writing with exhortations to be thankful.

One helpful way to be thankful is perspective. I am struck by a quotation, attributed to Bob Russell, ”It is a rare person who, when his cup frequently runs over, can thank God instead of complaining about the limited size of his mug.” Just recently, I realized anew that there is more month than money. After paying the bills, I stare at my devastated wallet. Normally, I would grumble and wish my “mug” were bigger. But after reading Russel, I learned to appreciate that my mug may be small, but it’s the mug God had given me and He filled it just right…every time.

Thankfulness is the lubricant that will ease much friction in marriage, such as squabbling over money, wrestling with a heavy workload or putting up with an annoying habit. We see the glass more as half-full rather than half empty. Yes, marriage is not perfect – what is perfect in this life anyway? – but we learn to be thankful for our spouses, instead of sniping at every flaw and lapse.

=======================================================================================

The secret to a never-ending honeymoon? Make it a marriage of three, not two.

In this sequel to How to Mend a Broken Heart, Nelson T. Dy uses biblical principles and practical advice to show married couples, husbands especially, how to cultivate a growing and deepening relationship. His advice: begin with a romantic God.

Whether you’ve been on the road for years or just beginning your journey, reignite the intimacy and passion of your honeymoon—and make it last ‘til death do you part.

The Honeymoon Never Ends is available at all OMF Lit Bookshops for only P195
