Our Sovereign and Holy God

This book comprises anguished dialogues with God, and fervent appeal, rather than prophetic preaching. Habakkuk was deeply distressed over the evil he saw in Judah. But greater than his distress over flagrant sin was his concern about the Lord’s slowness to bring judgment.

Today, as in Habakkuk’s day, people boldly defy God. Some even dare to say, “There is no God and even if there is, it doesn’t seem as if He cares about what is happening to His people.”

“How long, O Lord…? Often do we read this cry in Scripture. How painful is the Lord’s seeming indifference to injustice. Satan tempts us to believe that God does not care, but the Lord’s answer to Habakkuk proves He is both aware of what is happening and concerned about His people; furthermore, His response is sure: “Look at the nations and watch – and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.” Habakkuk 1:5

Are you dismayed by the unchecked wickedness in the world, the violence, poverty and moral bankruptcy of our times? In recent weeks have you cried out to God, “How long, O Lord?” for redress of some personal or humanitarian grievance? Take heart; the Lord does know, and He cares for His people.

Almighty God and Father, how great and wonderful You are! I praise You for Your holiness and Your sovereignty. Please increase my faith. May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
