“Literature to inspire” is the call that challenges OMF Literature to publish books that impact lives. With this year’s award-winning titles, OMF Literature hopes to continue publishing excellent sources of inspiration, instruction and insight.

Out of 117 entries, The Great Duck and Crocodile Race, written and illustrated by Robert Magnuson, was one of the 6 titles given the distinction of being a Best Read of 2012 by the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) at the 2nd National Children’s Book Awards last July.

Noted children’s literature advocate and NCBA judge, Robert Alejandro, was cited as saying “I loved the book. Apparently I wasn’t the only judge who loved the book. Everyone did. It was a clear unanimous decision…The story is delightful and the illustrations are wonderful. It is everything that will make a child want to fall in love with reading.”

Two books from OMF Literature also won in the 2012 Gintong Aklat Awards Inspirational category, given out by the Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP) at last month’s Manila International Book Fair.

The Honeymoon Never Ends by Nelson T. Dy offers couples Biblical principles and practical tips in order to cultivate a deeper relationship with each other. Aside from the author’s insights on reigniting the intimacy and passion of a lifelong honeymoon, the book also features inspiring stories of seasoned couples such as Joey and Marie Bonifacio (Victory Christian Fellowship), Nomer and Sylvia Bernardino, and Bo Sanchez (Kerygma).

Grace Found Me: 365 Thoughts For Busy Women was written by award-winning author Grace D. Chong. It’s a book full of inspiring thoughts for women who are forever drowning in tasks and responsibilities. The book reminds readers that God is the only one who can give rest to the weary mind, heart and soul. Grace Chong also recently won a Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature in the Short Story for Children category for her story “White Shoes.”

These three award-winning titles are available at all OMF Lit Bookshops, PCBS and National Bookstores nationwide.

HIYAS is OMF Literature’s imprint for children’s books. The word “hiyas” means “gem” in Filipino, an appropriate name for a line of books that contain treasures for children. In HIYAS books, readers will discover a wealth of enjoyable stories, memorable characters, imaginative art, and indispensable biblical values.

HIYAS stories are written especially for kids: some endearing, some action-packed, some informative. Creative illustrations combine with fascinating stories to trigger a kid’s imagination.

But at the heart of every HIYAS book is a Christian value essential to a child’s character development. Illustrated in stories, these essential lessons are easier to understand and apply.

Hiyas titles are available at all OMF Lit Bookshops, PCBS and National Bookstores nationwide.

One of our blogger friends, Michelle Padrelanan, reviews two of our newest Hiyas title that were launched just a few weeks ago at the 2011 Manila International Book Fair.

The Great Duck and Crocodile Race by Robert Magnuson

Here is one lovely little book about sportsmanship and friendship. Written and illustrated by Robert Magnuson, The Great Duck and Crocodile Race is about two friends – Duck and Crocodile – who challenge each other to a race. They each try to win the race by creatively outwitting each other. The ending is unexpectedly sweet.

At first reading, I thought it was just a way to teach a child about different kinds of vehicles – from bikes to cars to aircrafts. When children enjoy a book, they want to read it over and over again. The Great Duck and Crocodile Race was read to our kids by me, their dad and their big sisters. And we all agree that this is such a great book, a great way to teach sportsmanship. Personally, I believe this book can be sold internationally. It’s that good!

Bee Safe by Joyce Piap-Go

A few years ago I had the chance to share how I taught my then 6 year old girl about personal safety. I was surprised at the parents’ general reaction that time. Some did not know what to teach their children about safety inside and outside the home, when to teach them and the right way of teaching without actually scaring their children.

Here’s a book that parents can use to discuss safety with their children – Bee Safe by Joyce Piap-Go. The book’s central character is a little boy bee and he learns about being safe inside and outside the house. My four year old Flash Boy definitely remembers “Buzidee buzz buzz, I am Dee the Bee. As we read the book together, we also talk about his personal safety. It helps that it is beautifully illustrated by Maria Cristina Sison. The book’s illustrations and its adorable character helps my son and daughter to remember the importance of being safe.

The Great Duck and Crocodile Race and Bee Safe are available at all OMF Lit Bookshops nationwide for only P150 each. For more info about the books and other Hiyas titles, visit our website at omflit.com
